The BCBAce

Changing ABA for the better . . . . one child, one adult, one family at a time.

Candace Barefoot has been in the ABA world since 2003.  She has worked with individuals of all ages from 18 months old all the way to 24 years old.  From Autism, Emotional Disturbances, Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Fragile X, Cerebral Palsy, and more; Candace has had a wide variety of experience throughout the past 20 years in the field.

Candace has also had the privilege of working in both the private sector (in-home and in the clinical setting) as well as within the public school setting. She has been a special education teacher (PPCD Public Preschool for Children with Disabilities, Co-teacher, Resource teacher, centralized behavior unit teacher, general education teacher and Behavior Specialist) for three districts within the state of Texas and is fluently versed in all things education and the IEP (Individualized Education Plan).

As a parent of two children with special needs, Candace understands the difficulties of navigating the community and the public school system. When her son, Hunter, was diagnosed with Autism at only 3 years old, Candace worked hard to help him build his communication skills by providing him verbal behavior therapy around the clock. In May of 2016, Hunter went from being nonverbal, underserved and misunderstood by his neighborhood school to August of 2016 as a budding verbal communicator who had already mastered his annual goals that were introduced in just April thanks to the hard work and dedication of his mother.

Candace also understands the delicacy of working with individuals from a trauma background as a former foster parent. She has cared for over 13 children in the foster system and has seen the importance of providing empathetic care to all those that are exhibiting challenging behaviors as one can never truly know what is going on underneath the surface nor the impact that past experiences have on the present and future behaviors.

The ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) world has gotten a bad rap for the past couple decades. Candace is dedicated to turning that around! For the past 2 years, she has supervised 5 aspiring BCBA supervisees with a strong focus on ethics and top-notch treatment plans. She has created a Scope & Sequence that will guide those yearning to sit for the exam with experience and knowledge to do so with confidence and a deep understanding of the task lists.
